Should You Use AI on a Coding Interview? Decision Tree

There are two kinds of post on this question online. The first kind is a sermon — "real engineers don't cheat" — written by people who do not have a FAANG offer at stake on Friday. The second is a sales pitch — "use this tool, get the job" — written by people who do not pay the cost if you get caught.

This is neither. We sell an AI interview tool. That makes our position obvious. It does not make the question less real, and we owe candidates who are deciding it a more honest answer than either side of the existing discourse provides. The framework below is the one we would actually use if we were on the candidate side of the table. Eight forks. No universal answer. Real numbers where they exist.

The question is not "is AI cheating." It is "for this round, does the expected value of using AI clear the expected cost of getting caught, given my prep level and the platform's detection stack."

Fork 1 — Is the round AI-allowed, AI-disallowed, or ambiguous?

The 2026 FAANG hiring landscape splits into three round types, and the answer downstream depends on which one you are in:

  • AI-allowed. Stated explicitly by the recruiter. Examples: Anthropic, OpenAI, some Meta and Google rounds since late 2024. Refusing AI in these rounds is read as either signal-hiding or anti-AI ideology, both negative for 2026 hiring committees that want pair-with-AI fluency.
  • AI-disallowed and lightly proctored. Most live CoderPad rounds with a recruiter on Zoom. The browser content script is running (what it sees) but server-side fingerprinting is not. Stealth tools survive here if the architecture is right.
  • AI-disallowed and aggressively proctored. Skills Assessments, Certified Assessments, Karat-administered rounds, CoderPad Enterprise rounds tied to FAANG-tier offers. The full six-vector stack runs server-side. Most stealth tools fail here. A small number do not.

If the round is AI-allowed, use AI. The decision tree ends. Skipping the rest of this post in that case is correct.

If the round is ambiguous — neither stated nor unstated — assume AI-disallowed and aggressively proctored until evidence proves otherwise. The recruiter does not have to tell you proctoring is on for the platform to log it.

Fork 2 — How much does this round actually matter?

Stakes-per-round varies by an order of magnitude:

  • Phone screen at a $250K–$300K-comp company. One-shot. Failing it ends the loop. Stakes: an entire offer cycle.
  • Onsite final at a $500K+ comp company. Multi-shot but the cost of one bad round can drop the offer level by one or two bands.
  • Take-home for a screening role. Multi-shot, lower stakes per round, but a strong take-home is a strong signal upstream.
  • Recruiter screen with no coding. Zero coding stakes. Tool not relevant.

Map your round to one of these tiers before deciding. The expected-value math changes dramatically across them. A tool that is "worth the risk on a phone screen" is rarely the same tool that is "worth the risk on an onsite final round."

Fork 3 — What is the actual detection probability on this platform?

This is where most candidate-side decision-making goes wrong. People estimate detection probability based on vibe — "my friend used X on CoderPad and didn't get caught" — instead of architecture.

The honest current-state estimates:

  • HackerRank Skills Assessment. Six vectors. Browser-extension AI tools: ~95% caught within one round. Native overlay with hotkey leak: ~30–40%. Native overlay with kernel-mode hotkey hook and no clipboard touch: <5%. See the HackerRank playbook for vector breakdown.
  • CoderPad consumer. Four vectors. Lighter than HackerRank, especially without screen-share. Native overlays survive at much higher rates.
  • CoderPad Enterprise. Five vectors plus server-side companion. The hardest surface in the category. Browser extensions: ~99% caught.   • CodeSignal IQ. Adds keystroke biometrics and LLM-output corpus matching. Auto-paste is a near-certain flag. Manual transcription with pacing controls: low.
  • Karat / HireVue mocks. Webcam-on by default plus screen-share. Adds eye-gaze and head-movement analysis. The vectors are different but the architectural answer is the same.
  • Custom proctor browser surfaces. Variable. The architecturally-strongest tools survive most of them; the architecturally-weakest tools fail all of them.

Fork 4 — What is your downside if caught?

The tiered downside, from worst to mildest:

  • Cross-company blacklist. Some companies share candidate-side fingerprints internally and externally. Documented in TeamBlind threads as a real outcome (source). Rare in absolute terms; permanent if it happens.
  • Platform-side ban. HackerRank, CodeSignal, and CoderPad each maintain account-level enforcement. A ban means you cannot retake the platform's assessments for any company that uses it. This is a meaningful surface area; many large employers route through these platforms.
  • Single-loop disqualification. The recruiter discards your assessment. Loop ends. You can apply again in 6–12 months at most companies.
  • Manual review flag. The recruiter sees a fairness report flag, watches your code more closely in the next round, and pattern-matches your behavior. Recoverable if your behavioral and system-design rounds are strong.
  • No detection but the round goes badly anyway. The tool slowed you down or hallucinated. Behavioral round becomes the make-or-break. Recoverable.

The TeamBlind interviewer report — "candidates attempting to use Interview Coder have been blacklisted for life" — is the upper bound on the downside. The lower bound is "no one notices." Most outcomes sit in the middle two tiers. Price the tiers accordingly.

Fork 5 — What is your upside if uncaught?

The upside math is rarely as good as candidates think:

  • Time pressure relief. A 45-minute round with a 25-minute correct solution leaves 20 minutes for the follow-up round. Real, but only if the AI converges fast.
  • Catastrophic-failure insurance. You hit a problem you cannot solve unaided in 45 minutes. AI gets you to a working solution. Without it, you fail the round outright. This is the highest-EV use case for AI in interviews — the rare, single-problem situation where the alternative is a zero.
  • Optimization headroom. Brute-force passes test cases, but the interviewer pushes you to O(n log n). AI gives you the better solution and you walk through it. Real upside, modest in expectation.
  • Behavioral context preservation. AI handles the algorithmic load while you focus on talking through trade-offs. Marginal gain — the interviewer is grading the talk-through, not the typing speed.

What AI does not give you that candidates often think it does:

  • It does not save you on a follow-up round you also cannot solve unaided. Each round resets the dice.
  • It does not survive a deep "explain why you wrote it that way" probe. A senior interviewer can detect "you don't understand your own code" in 90 seconds, AI or not.
  • It does not improve your behavioral or system-design performance, which together are the largest weight bands at FAANG in 2026.

Fork 6 — What is your prep level on this problem space?

A useful question candidates rarely ask themselves honestly:

  • "I would solve this problem unaided in three minutes." Do not use AI. The risk-adjusted EV is negative — the small risk of detection swamps the modest time savings.
  • "I would solve this in 15 minutes if I am at my best, 30 minutes if I am off." Do not use AI on the easy days. Consider it on the off days only if the round matters and you have done the pre-flight.
  • "I would not solve this in 45 minutes." This is the use case AI exists for. The question becomes whether your prep level is low because the platform is unfair (ill-fit interview, bizarre problem) or low because you skipped prep work. The answer to that affects how you spend the next 30 days more than it affects this round.

The middle case — "solid pattern fluency but a meaningful failure rate on novel variants" — is where 80% of candidates live and where the decision is hardest.

Fork 7 — Do you have a tool whose stealth you actually trust?

Most candidates do not test their own AI tool against a real proctor surface before the round. They show up with a tool, press the hotkey, and hope. That is the failure mode behind most of the catch reports.

Three things to verify before you go in:

  1. The tool's hotkey does not leak into the page. Test with /proctor or any of the browser content-script vectors. If the keydown probe fires when you press the chord, the tool fails.
  2. The tool does not auto-paste model output. If it does, the paste vector flags every time on every modern proctor. Either turn the auto-paste off or use a different tool.
  3. The tool's window does not steal IDE focus. If the IDE loses focus when you invoke the tool, the focus-delta vector fires. Same disqualification.

If your tool fails any of those three pre-flight checks, the answer to "should I use it on this round" is "no" regardless of every other fork in this tree.

Fork 8 — Are you willing to do the prep work either way?

The framing this entire post avoids until now: AI does not replace prep. It is risk insurance for prep that fell short. Candidates who prepare for 8 weeks and use AI as a backstop have very different outcomes from candidates who prepare for 1 weekend and use AI as a substitute.

The interviewers see the difference. From an HN engineer who has run interviews against AI users:

"They often were able to get something out, but they had no foundation to reason about it and modify it. They would quickly become lost." (source)

The detection vector that catches under-prepared candidates is not technical. It is the follow-up question. If you cannot reason about your own code, the round is over regardless of whether the proctor's content script flags anything.

So: are you doing the prep? If yes, AI is reasonable insurance on hard-prep rounds where the platform's detection stack does not catch you. If no, AI is a structurally bad bet because the interviewer's own pattern recognition replaces the proctor's content script as the catching surface.

The middle paths most candidates ignore

The decision rarely needs to be all-or-nothing.

  • Prep with AI, interview without. Use AI as a learning accelerant during prep. Interview unaided. This is the dominant pattern among candidates who land FAANG offers in 2026.
  • Use AI for the screening round only. The screening is one-shot, the detection stack is lighter, and the EV per round is modest. Drop AI entirely once you reach onsite.
  • Use AI in the AI-allowed rounds, fully. This is the easiest case and the one most candidates handle worst — they refuse AI in the AI-allowed round out of caution and lose behavioral signal by looking like they cannot work with AI.
  • Use AI as catastrophic-failure insurance only. Hotkey ready, do not invoke unless you are 30 minutes in and stuck. Most rounds end without it being invoked. The risk surface is the time the chord is pressed; if you never press it, the surface is much smaller.

The verdict frame

The honest answer is that "should you use AI on a coding interview" decomposes into round-level decisions, and the right answer depends on the round, the platform, your prep level, and your tool's architecture.

For a candidate who:

  • Prepped for 6+ weeks
  • Has pattern fluency on the standard 23 patterns
  • Has a tool whose stealth survives /proctor's probes
  • Is interviewing on a platform within their tool's depth budget
  • Is treating AI as catastrophic-failure insurance, not as a primary path

…using AI on a hard-prep round is a defensible, EV-positive bet.

For a candidate who:

  • Prepped lightly
  • Has a tool that fails any of the three pre-flight checks above
  • Does not know the round's platform stack
  • Is treating AI as the primary path

…using AI is structurally a bad bet, and the right move is to delay the round and prep more.

The decision tree above is the one we would actually run. We are not telling you what to choose at each fork. We are telling you which forks exist.

FAQ

Is using AI on a coding interview cheating? It is a violation of most platforms' terms of service when AI is disallowed by the recruiter. Whether it is cheating in a deeper moral sense is your decision. We do not take a posture on the moral question — there are real candidates with real upside on both sides of the answer, and our job is to make the bet honestly priced, not to make it for you.

What is the realistic chance of getting caught with FaangCoder specifically? Lower than tools without kernel-mode protection on aggressively-proctored platforms; not zero. What if I get caught and blacklisted? The TeamBlind report of cross-company blacklisting is the upper bound. It is rare in absolute terms, real when it happens. The mitigation is not getting caught in the first place, which is what the pre-flight playbooks are for. There is no recovery path from a confirmed cross-company fingerprint.

Should I just refuse AI on principle? That is a coherent position, and we do not argue against it. We do note that on AI-allowed rounds at 2026 FAANG companies, refusing AI is itself a negative signal — the bar there is "can you pair with an AI productively," not "can you do without one." If your principles preclude AI on those rounds too, you are filtering yourself out of those companies, which is also a coherent choice with consequences priced in.

What about pair-with-AI rounds — how do those compare? Different category. Those are openly AI-allowed and the round measures collaboration, not stealth. Use whatever model you prefer (most companies allow Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, or whatever the candidate brings). Stealth is not the question; the question is whether you can drive the AI to a working answer faster than your interviewer.
